TROPHY EXHIBITION 2007

This year's Trophy Exhibition was opened by the Mayor of Derby Councillor Pauline Latham and drew a steady stream of visitors through the day. The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire and club Patron John Bather presented the prizes to this year's winners at the private view on Saturday evening.
The exhibition drew entries from many of our members and five works were sold.
The judges were John Fineron and Andrea Hadley-Johnson.
One of our models spoke in appreciation of the consideration we show to our models.

Controversy Corner

Sigmund Freud was, apparently, intensely interested in the process of creativity and especially in the strange fact that creative artists are unable to account for the source of their inspiration. A series of discussions under the title "The Creative Journey" is being given at the Freud Museum in London to mark the centenary of Freud's essay on "Creative Writers and Daydreaming". The lecturer, Michael Auditti will hold conversations with six creative people, including Jonathon Millar and Fay Weldon, in consideration of the theme.
(More details on the Freud Museum, London website.)

In his Arts Column in the Daily Telegraph Rupert Christiansen points out that people we would classify as creative artists would, in the Middle Ages, rank only as skilful imitators of life and that "Shakespear often equated 'creation' with delusion and dreams". He notes. however, that The Romantics considered artists as divinely inspired and, therefore, set their own works apart from mechanically, mass produced items, even though creativity must have entered the production process at its onset.

Christiansen considers that the idea of "creativity" has been thoroughly democratised so that today, haute cuisine, couture, flower arranging, homemaking, business seminars, and even`"thinking" are given equal consideration as creative subjects alongside poetry, art and music. "One could even say that the idea of creativity has become thoroughly debased" he writes,"very few of us are creators in the pure sense of using our imaginations to make something significantly new".
There is an unfortunate ring of truth about the journalist's final point that the Medievalists were largely right, most of what is today called 'creative activity' is more accurately described as mere copying.
